March 2015 - Osvaldo Fresedo with Roberto Ray
By: El Buldog
Sollozos
Vida Mia
Niebla Del Riachuelo
No quiero Verte Llorar
Osvaldo Fresedo (May 5, 1897 - November 18, 1984). The sweet romantic songs in this tanda were recorded in 1937 except for Vida Mia which was recorded in 1933. I love Roberto Ray’s singing on these tunes. The music and Ray’s voice seem to fit perfectly together. The songs lyrics for Sollozos and Vida Mia were written by Fresedo’s brother Emilio. His music is a great mood changer at a milonga, shifting things into more of a gentle sweet feeling mood.

Solamente ella
Igual que un bandoneón
Están sonando las ocho
Luico Demare was a performer from an early age. He spent years with Francisco
Canaro as his pianist and arranger. He performed all over the world in Paris, Spain and
Cuba. In 1938 he formed his own orchestra. Demare wrote great milonga’s, valses as
well as tango’s. In 1944 Luico hired Horacio Quintana as the singer for his orchestra and performed these wonderful sweet songs.

Tango Tanda
Francisco Canaro with Roberto Maida (All songs recorded in 1935)
Poema
Soledad
Ciega
Cambalache
In this tanda from 1935 we start off with the beautiful “Poema” which is a very unusual song for tango. It’s difficult to find other songs that fit with it’s melancholic but sweet flowing melodies in a tanda. Most the other songs in this tanda have a definitive beat, although melancholic as well. Part of the reason “Poema” is hard to fit with other Canaro songs is that it is considered a “European tango,” it was never popular in Buenos Aires but huge in Europe, France in particular where expat musicians from Argentina were popularizing tango. Enjoy…

October 2014 - Alternative Valz
By: El Buldog
Reve Bohemien - Baguette Quartette
Al Pie de Tu Reja (Under Your Window) - Antonio Tormo
Quiero Ser Tu Sombra - Trio Garufa
La valse d”Amelie - Yann Tiersen
This month Earl asked (challenged me…) for an alternative tanda. I thought it would be easiest to create a Valz tanda because there are so many pop waltz songs out there. When I create a tanda for our community I don’t like to make them too hard to dance to. This tanda is no exception, it’s simple, light and fun.
Sept 2014 - D’Arienzo - Valz (1935-37)
By: Bruce Fraser (El Buldog)
Pasion 1937
Valsecito Criollo 1937
Pabellón De Las Rosas 1935
Alma Dolorida 1937
Juan D'Arienzo (1900 – 1976) known as "King of the Beat” in the tango world. His music is played often at milongas all over the world. The instrumentals are the classic harder rhythmic tangos with a strong staccato dance rhythm. He also recorded many great milongas and fast valses like this tanda. D’Arienzo has been described as playing with a “joyous abandon.” Click on the video image to see.
August 2014 - Biagi
By: Bruce Fraser (El Buldog)
Biagi - Tango (1940-42)
Ahora no me conoces 1941 Indiferencia 1942
Yo También 1940
Todo Te Nombra 1940
Singer - Jorge Ortiz
Born in Buenos Aires Rodolfo Biagi (1906 - 1969) was a pianist, director and composer. Biagi made his professional debut at 14 in 1920 and is best known in tango circles for his work with D’Arienzo and his improvised piano fills that many a tanguera has added ornamentation to. After leaving the D’Arienzo orchestra and starting his own Biagi’s orchestra’s became easily recognized by their sort or, choppy, energetic and rhythmic style, much like the songs you hear in this tanda.
July 2014 - Donato
By: Bruce Fraser (El Buldog)
Edgardo Donato - Milonga (All songs 1938)
Sacale Punta
La Milonga Que Faltaba
Ella es asi Singer - -Horacio lagos
Edgardo Donato (1897 - 1963) was an Argentine violinist, orchestra director, and composer. Donato was known for making tango music that was playful and happy. These Milonga’s are no exception. This is a staple tanda you hear at many Milonga’s. Reason being there simply aren’t as many milonga’s (or vals’ for that matter) as tango tunes. Enjoy!

Angel D'Agostino with Angel Vargas
The tango of “the two angels" Ángel D'Agostino & Ángel Vargas, remains one of the most popular in the salons of Buenos Aires even to this day. Vargas had one of the sweetest voices in tango. The 2 met in 1932 and played together a few times but in 1941 formed their tango partnership and played amongst the best tango orchestra's of the 40’s. They recorded 94 sides together until 1946 when Vargas went his own way. This tanda is from 1941.
